Our first of the year First Friday Lecture (Feb.7) will be by our own Brenda Negley on the “History of the Early Pioneers of Fresno Flats“. It’s always a delight hearing a lecture from Brenda who is a fifth generation Oakhurstian and has a wealth of knowledge about the history of our community. Doors open at 5:30 pm for light refreshments and early seating, and lecture starts at 6:30 pm. Parking fills up fast so plan to show up early and enjoy a visit with an old friend.
Our First Friday lecture series and been so successful, that we’ve decided to compliment it with a Second Saturday demonstration series which will focus on artisan skills and activities from our not so recent past. Our demonstrations will include topics such as gold panning, bee keeping, historic cooking, horseback riding, and other exciting activities. On Saturday, February 8, we will launching our first Demonstration – “The Art and History of Whittling and Tatting”.
The event will have dual sessions led by the dynamic duo, Larry and Jean Smith. Larry will lead a session on whittling and Jean will lead a concurrent session on tatting and we are going to repeat both sessions in March. Larry and Jean are long-time Oakhurst residents and have been teaching their skills for many years in our community. In fact, you can see a collection of Jeans tatting now at the Oakhurst Library.
